Route: Banska Bystrica - Hronsky Benadik monastery - Svaty Anton manor - Banska Stiavnica - Banska Bystrica
Duration: 7 h
Our first stop we will make at the Benedictine monastery in Hronsky Benadik consists of a set of fortified sacral buildings. The monastic complex its stunning visitors with contemporary monumentality is a unique combination of sacred buildings and fortification as well as the symbiosis of different building styles - Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The complex of buildings even today seems to be as a guardian of the crossroads.Benedictine Abbey in Hronský Beňadik was solemnly consecrated in 1075 in the presence of the founder of the monastery, the Hungarian King Géza I. Archaeological research has proven that this place was inhabited already in the Great Moravian period. The construction of today's buildings complex took place during the reign of King Louis I - the Great of Anjou in the years 1345 - 1350. Significant monuments of fine art, liturgy, music and theological works had their origin just inside the walls of the Benedictine monastery. The Nitra codex, Latin Gospel and the oldest text written in Latin in Slovakia come from the monastery. It was also one of the so-called authoritative sites. His responsibilities included the issuance, validation and verification of relevant documents and papers, at the local convent people applied for proposal to solve disputes in property matters. The monastery was the place for storing archives and valuables at the same time. Monastery buildings stand around the court and space is completed by the dominant Temple Church of Our Lady and St. Benedict standing on the north side. Next we will visit to Svaty Anton manor which owing to the unique integrity, authenticity and variability of collections was declared national cultural monument . The manor house was originally built in baroque style as a two-wing building with arcades surrounding an open courtyard with a baroque stone fountain (detail can be seen in the picture of Apotheosis of Death of Mary Gabriella Kohary). In the middle of 18th century, Earl Andrej Kohary completed the process of re-building the manor house into a wealthy four-wing noble residence. The Kohary and Coburg families made an essential contribution in the history of the manor house. Here, they concentrated beautiful pieces of artwork and crafts from various parts of the world 18th – 20th centuries. The rich furnishing of rooms reflects the way of life, taste and hobbies of the members of these families. Next we will visit to Banska Stiavnica which is a completely preserved picturesque medieval town. There are churches, palaces of rich miners and town houses standing in the narrow valley, small mining houses are cringing in the hills above them. All of this is inter-linked by little romantic streets and paths with hundreds of stairs. Do not miss Štiavnica promenade – an elevated pathway Trotuár, Ružová Street. Because of their historical value, the town and its surroundings were proclaimed by the UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site. The fate of Banská Štiavnica has been closely linked to the exploitation of its abundant resources of silver ore. According to evidence from excavations, the site was settled during the Neolithic period. The first mining settlement was founded by Celts in the 3rd century BC. It was probably occupied by the Celtic Cotini tribe. The site was also settled by early Slavs and a Slavic fortified settlement was situated here in the 10th and 11th century.  The single common name „Schebnyzbana“ was documented for the first time in 1255. The local Slavic population was joined by skilled German settlers who started arriving in the 13th century. They adapted the local name to the German "Schemnitz". Banská Štiavnica gained the status of a royal town in 1238, as one of the first towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. After free time we will return to Banska Bystrica.
