Route: Dusseldorf - Castle Dyck - Monchengladbach - Dusseldorf
Duration: 4 h
Our first stop we will make at the Castle Dyck Jüchen which is one of the most culturally and historically important moated castles in North Rhine-Westphalia. The castle is set within an English landscaped garden. With outer baileys and courts, it is spread over four islands in the Kelzenberger Bach. The castle has been owned by the princely Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck family since the 14th century. The princes replaced the castle’s Baroque garden with the current English-inspired castle park in 1794. Numerous renowned landscape architects and garden designers helped to shape the park, including Thomas Blaikie and Peter Joseph Lenné. In 1999 Schloss Dyck became an international centre for garden art and landscape design. The grounds captivate with their themed and model gardens, avenues, wooded paths and meadows with an old tree population. Other impressive features are the shrub gardens with azaleas and rhododendrons, the flowerbeds, the variety of trees and the flowering meadows during the summer months. Next we will visit to city Mönchengladbach where at the end of the 10th century was Gladbach Abbey, one of the oldest in the country, was located on the territory of the present city. Over time, a small town that was first officially mentioned in 1085 appeared near the city. For several hundred years, the development of the town was based on the monastery economy, and in the 14th century, Mönchengladbach becomes a major trading center. The city accommodated several large textile factories, craft workshops, and breweries. One of the main historical symbols of the city is the Basilica of St. Vitus, which is a preserved part of an old Benedictine monastery. The church we see today was built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier one, it took more than a hundred years to build it. Within the walls of the church, there are many amazing religious artifacts: its visitors can see a beautiful antique organ, as well as a gold chest, the secret of which may be uncovered during the excursion. The old church is also characterized by spectacular design: it retains wonderful stained-glass windows, wooden elements, and other old decoration fragments. During our visit you will see many tourist highlights to discover, such as the Kaiser-Friedrich-Halle, the most beautiful art nouveau water tower in Germany or the Abteiberg Museum, the Rheydter Höhe with its “Monte Klamotte”, the Rheydt district , the Rheindahlen, Hockstein districts, the Nordpark with its sports stadiums Borussia Park and Sparkassenpark, the Maria-Hilf-Terrassen and the Seestadt. After free time we return to Dusseldorf.
