After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was conquered by Goths, Byzantines, Lombards and Frankish (!!!). Then finally, in the XII century, Savona became an independent city. Then the Middle Ages were the period of the Saracen pirates attacks. But after that, started the best period of Savona’s history.Between the XV and the XVI century, 2 elected popes were from Savona (Sixtus IV and Julius II). There are so many things people still don’t know about this city: for example, here you can find the second Sistine Chapel! Built in 1480-1483, it’s containing the Mausoleum erected by the Della Rovere Pope Sixtus IV to honor his parents. Also you will see the Torre Leon Pancaldo built in the 14th century and also known as “Torretta”, which is the symbol of the town,  The Fortress Priamar  built in 1542 by the Republic of Genoa and was a military prison up until 1903.  The Cattedrale di Nostra Signora Assunta is an old church with a mix of styles. It is set on a nice square, not far from where the old papal palace stands, with a flourished facade and quite imposing interiors,  Palazzo delle Piane in Via Mazzini, called “Building of Balls” due to some bronze spheres on its top. It was built in 1911 by the architect Alessandro Martinengo, considered the local Gaudì and the street of promenades, via Paleocapa. Next we will visit to city best known for its casino and annual Italian song festival, Sanremo is also popular for its unusual old town, La Pigna, whose narrow cobbled streets wind up the hill to a beautiful sanctuary and gardens with fantastic sea views. The surrounding area is known for the production of flowers and olive oil. The Old City of Pigna is district of La Pigna dates back to the 11th century.  A labyrinth of secret shortcuts, stacked houses, tunnels and narrow passages, leading to the highest point of the city, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa.  An enjoyable walk during the day, passing by plazas with wonderful little shops, churches and cafes. Palazzo Borea d’Olmo is considered one of the most important Baroque edifices in Europe.  The actual structure, though, dates from medieval times. Above the entrance is a 16th century sculpture of the Madonna & Child, while the exaggerated sculptures around the windows date from the 18th century. One of the largest public gardens is located at the Villa Ormond. Filled with fountains, pathways, and a secret Japanese garden that honors their sister city, Atami. The Moorish style of the Villa Nobel, once owned by Alfred Nobel, has a classic garden filled with old growth trees and wandering pathways.  Also you will see the Casino which was built in the age of Belle Époque, the Art Nouveau style of the Casinò Municipale di Sanremo is one of the signature works of Parisian architect Eugène Ferret. Next we will visit to village Varigotti where this stretch of coast, of a natural inlet sheltered from the winds that made such location one of the safest ports along the entire Western Riviera. For this reason it was of great interest to the Romans, Byzantines and Lombards. Later came the Saracens, coming from Provence and who stayed at Varigotti due to the safety of the place which was difficult to access from the land. Due to this, the name of "Saracens" was attributed to the residents of Varigotti together with the Moorish features of the old village homes that are not found in any other Ligurian locality. The port, object of disputes between Noli and the marquisate of Finale, saw its greatest prosperity with the domination of the Del Carrettas. In 1341, the Genoans buried the port of Varigotti in order to eliminate possible rivals. With the French Revolution, Varigotti was established as an independent municipality that in 1869 was united with Final Pia, then with Final Marina and Finalborgo, in order to constitute the current Municipality of Finale Ligure.
