Route: Gothenburg - Bohus fortress - Marstrand - Carlsten Fortress - Gothenburg

The first stop of our tour will be at Bohus fortress. The construction of Bohus Fortress began in 1308 under King Haakon V Magnuson, king of Norway from 1299 to 1319. Håkon V also initiated construction of Norwegian fortresses at Akershus and Vardøhus as part of a broader defensive policy. At the time Bohuslän was Norwegian territory and served as the main Norwegian defence against Sweden,along the coast as well as the strong point for the Bohuslän region from 1308 to 1658. After we will drive to Marstrand where we will take our second stop in our tour. The picturesque small town Marstrand was founded on a small rocky island, already in the 13th century. Marstrand has a dramatic history, as a "porto franco" (free port) and center for not only traders, but also smugglers. At the top of the rock, rises the impressive 17th Century Carlsten Fortress. Enjoy the view of the sea and archipelago from the walls of the fortress. Take a walk through this idyllic town, with many old wooden houses and where car driving is forbidden!Our next stop will be at Carlsten Fortress. The fortress was built on the orders of King Carl X of Sweden following the Treaty of Roskilde, 1658 to protect the newly acquired province of Bohuslän from hostile attacks. The site of Marstrand was chosen because of its location and its access to an ice free port. Initially a square stone tower was constructed, but by 1680 it was reconstructed and replaced by a round shaped tower in 1860 when it was reported finished. The fortress was decommissioned as a permanent defense installation in 1882, but remained in military use until the early 1990s. The fortress was attacked and besieged twice, both times falling into enemy hands. In 1677 it was conquered by Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, the Danish military commander in Norway during the Battle of Marstrand and in 1719 by the Norwegian Vice-Admiral Tordenskjold. At both occasions the fortress was returned to Swedish control through negotiations and treaties. After the visit we will back to Gothenburg.
