Route: Graz - Bruck an der Mur - Oberkapfenberg Castle - Leoben Gosser beer factory - Eisenerz - Graz
Duration: 10 h
The first stop of this tour will be at the unassuming town of Bruck an der Mur. Founded in the 9th century, Bruck’s fortunes prospered during the 14th and 15th centuries due to its position at the confluence of the Mur and Mürz rivers and its role in the salt and ironwork trade. Almost all the major attractions in Bruck lie in or around its main square, the Koloman-Wallisch-Platz, which is lined by an attractive ensemble of ocher-hued townhouses. During our visit you will see the Gothic Town Hall with its classicist facade and triangular gables, the arcaded Fabriziushaus, and the Renaissance Flössmeisterhaus.  One of the symbols of the city, an iron well, which is distinguished by its intricate 17th-century wrought-iron canopy, the Clock Tower,  the gorgeous Kornmesserhaus, built in the early 16th century for an affluent ironmonger Pankraz Kornmess, it is one of the most impressive Gothic buildings in Austria, the Kornmesserhaus , the St. Rupert’s Church (Ruprechtskirche), the church’s claim to fame is the splendid High Renaissance Last Judgement fresco occupying the arch above the high altar. Our next stop will be at the Oberkapfenberg Castle (Burg Oberkapfenberg) which is the medieval castle, perfectly situated on a hilltop overlooking the whole town. The present castle dates back to the mid-13th century when it was built by the Counts of Stubenberg.  It got a Renaissance facelift in the mid-16th century but fell into ruins in the mid-18th century when the Stubenberg’s moved into the new Wieden Castle. Today, the castle functions as a cultural and culinary experience. You can take a tour of the castle and see parts of the castle like the Knight’s Hall, the Loreto chapel, and the only surviving alchemist furnace in Europe. The alchemy exhibition is kind of eerie and sheds some light on the secrets of gold production. The Black Madonna of Maria Loretto is just a few minutes’ walk from the castle at the highest point of Kapfenberg’s castle mountain. has remained a popular pilgrimage shrine to this day. The chapel was built in 1676 on the site of the first castle (1140). The interior design dates back to 1770. The “Plait of Agnes of Stubenberg” is preserved in the chapel. Next we will visit to Leoben reveals a few surprises once you dig down into its modest urban soul, and an interesting museum quarter is one very good reason to prolong a visit here . A centre for metallurgical industries and home to Gösser beer, the town achieved ultimate fame with the peace treaty signed here in 1797 by Napoleon and Emperor Franz II.Today, Leoben is also home to a renowned University of Mining. There we will visit at the source of Austrias best beer will not only a beer connoisseur delight: but the redesign of the Gösser Braumuseum brings technical finesse and the charme past decades is being captured by rarities and exhibits.Through more than a thousand year history you will find much worth knowing around beer, the brewing and the brand Gösser in particular. The trained staff will accompanies you through the venerable masonry until the end of the tour for freshly tapped Gösser with beer pretzel with pleasure! Our last stop of this tour will be at Eisenerz, nestled at the foot of the extraordinary Erzberg (Iron Mountain). This unusual peak has been completely denuded by open-cast stope mining and resembles a step pyramid. The outcome is eerie and surprisingly beautiful, with its orange and purple shades contrasting with the lush greenery and grey crags of surrounding mountains. To see this majestic beauty up close, we will join an underground tour about one-and-a-half hours, you will get to know the underground working world of miners. You will learn about how the Erzberg was created, hear the legend of the “Wassermann” and how the mountain was first discovered, and get to witness an audiovisual reenactment of lasting. And for those of you who wish to lend a hand, you are welcome to grab a shovel or one of the pneumatic hand drills! Next we will visit to a picturesque Old Town where dominated by an attractive main square, Bergmannsplatz, grouped around the 16th-century Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) which is tastefully decorated with abstract sgraffito motifs. Also we will see the marvelous Church of St. Oswald (Pfarrkirche St. Oswald), fortified in the 16th century against the advancing Ottoman Turks. The church itself dates from the 13th century but gained its current late-Gothic appearance from an extensive face-lift in the late 15th century. The church is full of reminders of Eisenerz’s mining history: the relief of Adam and Eve above the door as you enter shows Adam dressed in medieval mining gear, while inside a wooden sculpture of a miner high up in the roof strikes a bell on the hour. After we will return to Graz.
