Early morning we will leave Iasi and will go to Bukovina region for visit of 3 famous UNESCO World Heritage Monasteries. Learn about the Bukovina region and admire the art and architecture of the Voroneț, Humor, and Suceviţa monasteries. Visit the most important and appreciated monasteries in Bukovina, a historical region shared by Romania and the Ukraine, on a full-day trip from Iasi. See 3 of the 8 churches that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore your surroundings while gaining a greater understanding of the cultural and historic significance of the area. The monasteries of Voroneț, Humor, and Suceviţa were all built between the late 15th century and the late 16th century, and their external walls are covered in fresco paintings inspired by Byzantine art. Far from being mere wall decorations, the paintings form a systematic covering on all the facades and represent complete cycles of religious themes. Their exceptional composition, the elegance of the characters, and the harmony of the colors blend perfectly with the surrounding countryside. Our first stop will be in Voroneț Monastery - a medieval monastery in the Romanian village of Voroneț, now a part of the town Gura Humorului. It is one of the famous painted monasteries from southern Bukovina. The monastery was constructed by Stephen the Great in 1488 over a period of 3 months and 3 weeks to commemorate the victory at Battle of Vaslui. Often known as the "Sistine Chapel of the East", the frescoes at Voroneț feature an intense shade of blue known in Romania as "Voroneț blue". Our next stop will be in Humor Monastery which located in Mănăstirea Humorului, about 5 km north of the town of Gura Humorului, Romania. It is a monastery for nuns dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin Mary, or Theotokos. It was constructed in 1530 by Voievod Petru Rareş and his chancellor Teodor Bubuiog. The monastery was built over the foundation of a previous monastery that dated from around 1415. Our next visit will be in Suceviţa monastery which was built in 1585 by Ieremia Movilă, Gheorghe Movilă and Simion Movilă. The architecture of the church contains both Byzantine and Gothic elements, and some elements typical to other painted churches of northern Moldavia. Both interior and exterior walls are covered by mural paintings, which are of great artistic value and depict biblical episodes from the Old and New Testament. The paintings date from around 1601, which makes Sucevița one of the last monasteries to be decorated in the famous Moldavian style of exterior paintings. On your return trip, stop in the commune of Marginea for a black pottery workshop, before returning to Iasi.
