Route: Rome - Villa Farnese - Civita di Bagnoregio - Bolsena - Viterbo - Rome
Duration: 12 h
Our first stop in this tour we will make at the Villa Farnese, also known as Villa Caprarola, is a mansion in the town of Caprarola.  It is a massive Renaissance and one of the main jewels of the Roman Renaissance. Tour of Palazzo Farnese offer the opportunity to discover the Sangallo’s atrium, the courtyard, the garden, the Hercules salon - with its tapestries inspired to Raffaello’s frescos , the Camerini and absolute masterpiece of the Carracci brothers, realised between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. Next we will visit to Civita di Bagnoregio is a magical, surreal, fantastic place located on top of a tuff hill that can only be reached by crossing a narrow pedestrian bridge. From there you can enjoy one of the most stunning panoramic views of the whole Lazio region. Nick-named "the town that is dying", due to the constant erosion of the tuff rocks where it is placed has Etruscan and Medieval origins. Suspended in time and space, Civita di Bagnoregio is beyond doubt one of the most beautiful and characteristic Italian villages. Once you cross the bridge, the first important monument that you will find is Porta San Maria, surmounted by a pair of lions grabbing two human heads, symbol of the despots defeated by the inhabitants of Bagnoreggio. Up ahead, via San Maria widens into the main square, where you can admire the Romanesque church of San Donato restored in the sixteenth century. Here are kept very interesting works, like the wonderful fifteenth-century wooden Crucifix by the school of Donatello, and a fresco by the school of Perugino. Main square in Civita with the Church of San Donato The Renaissance buildings of Colesanti, Bocca and Alemanni stand out in the tiny alleys with the typical low-rise houses with small balconies and little ladders, typical of Medieval architecture. Next we will visit to the largest volcanic lake in Europe and the fifth largest lake in Italy, Lago di Bolsena covers 114 km sq, has a circumference of 43km and is 151m at its deepest. It was formed about 370,000 years ago when the volcano erupted so powerfully that the caldera collapsed into a deep bowl, which then gradually filled with water. The village is known as “The City of the Eucharistic Miracle” , the Corpus Domini to whom the Infiorata is dedicated, also giving it the name “City of the Infiorata (Flower decorations)”. The village of Bolsena dates back to the 3rd century BC, when it became inhabited by those escaping the destruction of Velzna, a prestigious Etruscan city whose traces are found in the remains uncovered at the necropolis in the Turona Natural Archaeological Park. You can see in the historic centre is the 16th century Palazzo Cozza Crispo and the Fountain of San Rocco, commissioned by Giovanni de’ Medici and still considered so miraculous by the people of Bolsena that on August 16th, they celebrate the blessing of the waters, the baroque Chapel del Miracolo recalls the miracle of the host from which blood flowed between 1263 and 1264 and the medieval fortress Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara of 1156. Next we will visit to city of Viterbo which is known for its well-preserved medieval monuments. We will straight to the Piazza di San Lorenzo, where you’ll find two of Viterbo’s major attractions. The 12th-century, Romanesque Duomo di Viterbo (or Cattedrale di San Lorenzo) is the first. This impressive church stands on the site of an Etruscan temple of Hercules. Attached to the cathedral is the second – the Palazzo dei Papi (Papal Palace). Viterbo was once the seat of Italy’s popes, to which the palace is a testament. Over 24 years in the mid-13th century the Palazzo dei Papi saw the election of 5 popes in the Sala del Conclave. As a matter of fact, the longest ever election of a pope took place here, lasting 3 years! Don’t miss the 15th-century fountain within the palace’s loggia, which is made from various materials from various eras.  Viterbo once had nearly 100 fountains! Be sure to explore the winding medieval alleys and hidden corners of the city to see how many you can find!  You will see the Palazzo Papale, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the San Pellegrino district, residential centre of medieval Viterbo, Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo dei Governatori and the Palazzo del Podesta. After we return to Rome.
