Route: Valencia - Xativa - Moorish Caves (Covetes dels Moros) - Gandia - Valencia
Duration: 12 h
Our first stop in this tour will be at Xativa where we discover its imposing castle, with the magic of its historical center and you will be surprise with the exciting stories that we will listen. During our visit you will know the strategic importance of the fortress, witness of sieges and revolutions, ambitions of kings and rulers of all times whose greatest desire was to possess it, also we will delight ourselves in the fragrance of its endemic plants, the energy of its ancient walls, the freshness of the breeze in the heights and the idyllic landscape. Later we will enter in the magic of the Historical Center, we walk through its cobbled streets full of beautiful palaces with coats of arms; fountains full of life and health and exquisite temples, deserving of the highest ecclesiastical dignities. Finally, we briefly visit the museum to learn about the history of a cruel king hose portrait hangs upside down as a symbol of punishment and the ancient store of wheat or Almudín, where you will surprised by an enigmatic archaeological piece, the beautiful and unique Arabic Pile of Xativa. Our next stop will be at Moorish Caves (Covetes dels Moros) Where are a group of cave-windows, or man-made caves with holes in the shape of windows, which were carved into the side of a rock escarpment. Situated on the right hand side of Fos Ravine they are only 300 metres from the town’s old quarter. This is the most complex and numerous of all the cave-window groups found at the head of the Clariano River. They are made up of about fifty windows that give access to as many chambers, and there are nine other windows, which are incomplete. The windows are dispersed along three different levels but without actually forming regular “floors”. The majority of these chambers were probably originally constructed as isolated units, seeing as they all have anchoring rings for ropes, and runnels and grooves for fitted doors and window frames… however, nowadays the chambers are interconnected via gaps in the walls (that also appear to be ancient), as well as via small “chimney-flues” that give access to the different levels. One of the windows is situated at a lower level than the rest of the group – at a height of about 8 metres above the ground – and does not have an internal chamber but instead is a type of “chimney” with steps carved into it. Our last point will be the city Gandia. Gandia is a city of the Borgia family that is trying to recover its rich cultural past that goes back to the Paleolithic. And it conserves interesting remains of its past in its urban enclosure. Our first place of visit will be the Ducal Palace is the symbol of Gandia, official residence of the Borgia family and birthplace of Saint Francis of Borgia. The Ducal Palace of the Borgias of Gandia, listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1964, is one of the most representative civil structures in Valencia’s historic heritage. Located in the historic centre of Gandia, next to the Collegiate Church of Santa María and the City Hall, the Palace has stood witness to the evolution of this capital of the La Safor district since its early age. The interior shows a variety of architectural styles, with vestiges of the primitive 14th and 15th-C Gothic palace, Renaissance contributions in the 16th C , Baroque extensions and transformations in the 17th and 18th centuries, and finally neo-Gothic reconstructions from the late 19th and early 20th C. After that, we will walk around of the city centre where there are other buildings such as the Collegiate Church of Santa María, the Town Hall or the old University, founded in the XVI century by Saint Francis of Borja and considered  the first University of Jesuites. It was closed in 1772, some years later because of the expulsion of the Jesuites. The building is presided by 5 sculptures which represent the most famous members of the Borgia family: The two Popes Borja, Calixto III and Alejandro VI, two of his children, César and Lucrecia Borja and the sculpture of Saint Francis of Borgia. After that we will drive to Valencia. Where you will open the vibrant history, and architectural splendour of Valencia's Old Town and historical centre . You'll learn about more than 2,000 years of Valencia's history, starting with the Roman ruins and old Muslim city. During the tour you will see the Town Hall Square, Round Square (Plaza Redonda), Central Market), visit inside the Silk Market/Lonja (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Basilica of the Virgin of the Helpless People, Generalitat Palace, Serrano´s Towers, Palace of Benicarló, Cathedral, Plaza de la Reina, Alms Square, Archbishop Square, Saint Vincent Crypt, Saint Vincent Ferrer Square, Paz Street, Patriarch Square, Old University (courtyard), Palace of the Marchis of Dos Aguas.
