Route: Varna - Balchik - snail farm in Bulgarevo - Kaliakra Cape - Varna
Duration: 5 h
Enjoy a picturesque journey along the coast to Kaliakra Cape - a natural phenomenon and a historic place, tour of the ruins of the medieval fortress and a photo break, continue to the town of Balchik for a visit to the Botanical Gardens and the summer residence of the Romanian Queen Maria. Our first stop is snail farm in Bulgarevo. Here, you’ll get to taste snail-based delicacies – and the kids can organise snail races.  Next, you’ll head to the resort of Balchik for lunch and a tour of a former royal palace. Balchik’s most famous resident was Queen Marie of Romania, who spent her last decade in her summer palace. She found solace here in the 1930s, wandering the botanical gardens and meditating in her eclectic Baha’i temple. The town was established 26 centuries ago by Greek settlers named Krunes. In the 6th century BC the town was named after the Greek God of wine and joy – Dionysus – Dionisiopolis. In the 4th century BC Dionisiopolis was quite an important economic center. Then it’s on to Cape Kaliakra, which you’ll enter through the old gate guarding this outcrop, with drops of 70 metres to the sea. Cape Kaliakra is one of the most beautiful and historic Capes in Europe. Situated close to the Romanian border, it is a favourite stop for tourists looking for pretty sights and interesting historic places to visit north of Varna. The fortress was successively used by Tracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians. According to legends, the fortress was guarding the treasuries of Lyzimah, successor of Alexander the Great.
