Route: Volos
Duration: 2 h
Do you enjoy walking around the old parts of a city and exploring backstreets and alleys where you wouldn’t venture on your own? Are you an Archaeology fan? Are you passionate about history? The Historic District of Volos Walking Tour will reveal the secrets of the Old Town of Volos (or Palia as the locals call it), including an insiders tour of a Mycenaean palace and tholos tomb, Roman baths, early Christian churches, a Byzantine fortification wall with a moat, and an Ottoman gunpowder magazine. Although the neighborhood can be navigated by pretty much any visitor on their own, they can easily miss all the history behind the stones, as well as lots of surprising details that only a local PhD archaeologist can show you and explain. You will go away from this walk with a deeper understanding of Volos’ long history and its mythological past, having discovered a historic neighborhood that is 5,000 years old. Our tour starts outside the Tsalapatas Brick and Tile Museum and ends two hours later at the Volos Town Hall (Dimarcheion).
