Route: Bratislava - Smolenice Castle - Cerveny Kamen castle - Trnava - Bratislava
Duration: 9 h
Our first stop in this tour will be at the Smolenice Castle was built in the 14th century.  At the beginning of the 15th century it was royal property.  Later it was in ownership of more counts, in the 16th century the castle was owned by the Orszagh family, then nearly two centuries it was in ownership of the family Erdődy. In 18th century, the castle became the property of the Pálffy family - count János Pálffy from city of Pezinok. Works on the fortification walls started in 1887. The new castle was designed by architect Jozef Hubert. He used Kreuzenstein castle near Vienna as a model, and the works were controlled by the architect Pavol Reiter from Bavaria. During its construction there were masters from Italy, Germany, Austria and Hungary, but also local craftsmens from Smolenice and the surrounding villages. Next we will visit to the most beautiful castle in the Malé Karpaty mountains, which is one of the best preserved Slovak Castles  - Červený Kameň. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt into a bulky fortress with a fortification system that was then one of the top military-defensive systems. Although the Fugger family built the massive fortress in the first half of the 16th century on the site of an original royal castle from 13th century, its history is connected with the noble family of the Pálfis. This important Hungarian aristocratic family gradually altered it into a stately residence with rich stucco ornamentation and frescos in the interior. Because of its unique charm, the Castle has become the venue of shooting of various films and fairy tales like The Princess Fantagiró, the Dragon Heart or Cinka Panna. The route of a guided tour leads through twenty-four richly furnished rooms. You will walk through parlours, bedrooms, a dining room and a knight`s hall, where can see the installment of contemporary interior furnishings of nobility since the Renaissance period until the Secession period. Onwards a guided tour will continue through the castle underground, a part of which is also a fortification system of the castle. Next we will reach the city Trnava which was the first privileged royal town in Slovakia also was the Church "capital" of the Kingdom of Hungary for several centuries. You can see here unique religious sights and get a glimpse of the Middle Ages when walking through its historical streets. Trnava is the seat of the Trnava University and the University of Sts. Constantine and Methodius, and since 1978 the Slovak metropolitan seat of archbishop also the centre of the town has been designated the Town Monument Reserve. The first trustworthy written reference to Trnava is from 1211,  the document issued by King Belo IV in 1238. Trnava flourished the most in the 16th century when it became an important centre of commerce. In 1543, when the Turks assaulted and occupied Esztergom, the Archbishop of Esztergom along with the Chapter moved to Trnava and the town became the centre of cultural and ecclesiastical life of the Kingdom of Hungary for almost 300 years. For their high level of preservation, Trnava town walls are unique from the construction point of view and rank among the most significant monuments of the kind in Europe. Fortifications are from the 13th to 16th centuries. The dominant feature of the square and in fact of the town as well, is the town tower. Majster Jakub built it in 1574 on Gothic foundations and its view terrace provides a perfect view of Trnava and its environs. The first Early Baroque building of national significance, university church is one of the most valuable historical monuments. The monumental wooden main altar from 1640 is a real jewel of its interior. Other university buildings, including the college, grammar school, university, seminars and refectories were added to accompany the university church. Standing on the site of an older Romanesque church from the 14th century, there is another important Gothic monument on the Sv. Nicolaus square - St. Nicholas Minster. It was a cathedral church of the Esztergom Archbishop in the years 1543-1820. After free time we return to Bratislava.
